Supplements: What You Need to Take When (and at What Age)

I thought four supplements a day was hard-core, but 45? Geez Louise. Hilary Swank has happily admitted to taking this many vitamins, minerals and supplements a day – all at scheduled hours of the day.

Overkill anyone?

Look, I am no health expert – and Ms Swank certainly does look kick-ass incredible – so maybe the more (legal) pills per day, the better?

What I do know is that the importance of a multi-vitamin is nothing to thumb your nose at, and certain added extras are essential at various life-stages.

Let me break down for you what you need when (as in decade, not each hour) …

Teens:
Partying hard, studying harder and training until you drop? Whether you partake in all or some of these teenage pastimes, you have to give kudos to your body for keeping up the momentum. No doubt sleep isn’t high on the list of priorities and maybe those toxins need a bit of a talking too as well? Just saying/nagging.

Swisse Women’s Teenage Ultivite, $17.49, from supermarkets
Blackmores Teen Multi for Girls, $25.95, from supermarkets

20s:
Your twenties is a perfect time to outgrow the drive-through burgers and adopt an eating plan heavy on the greens and thin on the preservatives – if you haven’t already got this smart. This really is the foundation of a more youthful appearance down the track so to help you along, a good multivitamin is a great place to start alongside vitamin D for bone strength (which can begin to deplete right about, um, now – especially if you don’t quit that Twerking) and a vitamin C to boost immunity and maintain that 20-something merry-go-round of late nights, long days and crammed calendars.

Bioglan Vitamin D3, $18.95, from pharmacies and health food stores
Natures Way High Strength Vitamin C 1000mg, $14.95, from pharmacies and healthfood stores

30s:
This decade can see you married to the job, chained to the desk, running around after small humans (i.e.; children, not oompah loompahs) or trotting the globe. Either way, man, you are going to be buggered. Shifts in energy levels (i.e.; more outgoing, less incoming) mean you need help so a vitamin B12 is the boom your body needs. Digestion can also lag, so introduce a probiotic to your day and if you are not yet up the duff but are considering it, you need to begin taking folic acid to help protect against any birth defects.

40’s:
Your skin is drying faster than you can say ‘Frig I’m 40!’ so a Krill or Fish Oil will really boost hydration if taken religiously. What’s inside counts too, so be mindful of protecting your heart. Consult your Dr. on the options for reducing cholesterol and also upping those Strong Bone Builders like Calcium and possibly some Green Tea extracts to boost your tiring metabolism.

50′s:
Hormones moan into action, tricking your system and bringing on some major faults in the electrics. So try getting it back in balance with a menopause supplement. Eye health and arthritic pain reduction may now be on your radar too, so there are Emu Oil options for the latter and vitamin A supplements for vision.

As the fine print imprint in my brain insists, I must urge you to consult a doctor before taking any supplements Primpettes!

Do you take minerals and supplements?

Which ones do you swear by?
