Cosmetics Check: Five Ways to Update Your Coverage Choice

Are you looking older than you should due to an ill-fitting foundation?

Is that matte foundation dragging down your complexion but shooting your estimated age up the charts?

Foundation shades and textures can add months if not years from your face, whereas the right fit can make you look instantly more rested or hydrated. Take Brooke Shields for example! At nearly 50, she is doing herself major favours by using a creamy formulations in a warm, well-fitted tone:

Here are some guidelines to have on-hand when re-accessing your current coverage choices. Do it now. With a few tweaks, you could reinvent your look – and your vigour – by nightfall …

1. Skin tone and texture loses vibrancy as we age, so it’s important to introduce hydrating properties to your base. This way, you are ensuring that dehydration doesn’t take hold during the day, and therefore fine lines and any dullness are avoided from A.M to P.M.

Try: Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Foundation, $56.95, from Mecca Cosmetica

2. Never skimp on the quality of your products as you age. Those extra dollars are worth spending to get a foundation, concealer or primer are sympathetic to your skins needs. All that research and development (that can contribute towards the higher price tag) are worth paying for.

3. The power of powder diminishes as you age as traditionally they are used to control shine which – due to hydration – is not as prevalent as you age. Therefore, any mattifying that is needed can best be found via a matte liquid or cream foundation – which will hydrate whilst creating an even, shine-free effect, rather than a powder which can seep into, and accentuate, lines and wrinkles.

4. Gaunt cheeks can also be accentuated by brown and burgundy blush tones, so opt for apricots and really subtle peaches with a punch of luminiscence to keep the contours complimentary and vibrant. But always blend. Blend. And blend just a little bit more in patting, circular motions (so as not to pull at skin or dry out sensitive complexions any further).

5. The jury is out on whether you should apply foundation before or after concealer as you age, but one thing is unanimous; you only need apply it where you need it. For me, it’s always after foundation as only then can you see where blemishes, redness or darkness linger. To gauge this best, look into the mirror in daylight (rather than under bright fluorescents) and pat in concealer lightly. Go for a creamy option to prevent caking and collecting in lines and wrinkles.

Try: Benefit FakeUp Concealer, $35, from department stores

To ensure you have even coverage with your foundation and it doesn’t collect in any smile lines, lines around the mouth or around a softening jawline, apply it in dots down the centre of the face and blend outwards with the pads of the fingers towards the hairline. Then add the concealer where it is needed (as per above).

So, Primpettes, what current foundation textures are you using?

Do prefer matte or creamy?
